Caroline “Carol” Ngumbu was only 21. A quiet, hardworking young woman from Gachie, Kiambu, she had just completed her course at Kenya Medical Training College in Karen and was looking forward to graduating in December 2017.
That Friday, 28 July 2017, Carol went to meet Chris Msando, an IEBC ICT manager she had been seeing. She told her sister she was going for a few drinks. It sounded like an ordinary evening.
It was the last time her family ever heard from her.
By Saturday, Msando was missing too. His abandoned car was found in Roysambu. Then came the devastating news: their bodies had been discovered in a thicket in Muguga Forest, Kikuyu. Carol had been strangled. She was found only a few hundred metres from Msando.
Her sister Jedida was the one who went to the mortuary and identified her.
Imagine a mother waiting at home, praying for her daughter to return, only to learn through the news that she was already dead.
Carol’s parents had taken a loan to educate her. She had worked hard, completed her studies and was preparing for graduation. Instead, her dreams ended in a forest at just 21.
She was laid to rest at the family home in Gachie. White and red roses covered the fresh grave.
And perhaps the most painful part is this: nine years later, no one has been charged over her death.
Carol was not a politician. She was not a public figure. She was simply a young woman whose life was full of promise.
