H Leonea Baraza is mourning the tragic loss of his fiancée, Veronica, who was among the 17 Catholic pilgrims killed in a devastating multiple-vehicle crash on Saturday morning.
The pilgrims were traveling along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway to the Subukia National Marian Shrine for the National Prayer Day when tragedy struck.
For Baraza, the loss is unbearable. The couple had just completed the dowry negotiation process in August and were actively planning their wedding set for February 2027.
He recalls their final conversation on Friday evening while Veronica was passing through Mtito Andei. When subsequent calls went unanswered through Friday night and Saturday morning, he held out hope—only to receive the devastating news that she had perished in the crash.
The tragic accident occurred at Mlima Kiu in Salama, Kilome, involving a 14-seater matatu, two lorries, and several other vehicles.
