Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot with more than a decade of experience in commercial aviation, has been identified as the FlyDubai captain at the centre of a dramatic incident involving Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Machchhar has been praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his actions during the flight, after a suspected confrontation in the cockpit reportedly placed the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in a dangerous situation.
The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday when, according to Israeli officials and accounts attributed to passengers, an altercation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit. Israeli authorities have alleged that the aircraft's co-pilot attacked Machchhar in what appeared to be an attempt to take control of the aircraft.
The reported confrontation quickly turned into an aviation emergency, with the aircraft said to have lost thousands of feet in altitude. The situation raised serious concerns for the passengers and crew as efforts were made to regain control of the aircraft.
Despite the reported circumstances inside the cockpit, Machchhar remained at the controls and the aircraft was eventually diverted to Saudi Arabia, where it could land safely.
The incident has since drawn attention to the captain, with Netanyahu publicly identifying Machchhar and crediting him with helping prevent what could have developed into a much more serious aviation disaster.
Machchhar's identification has also sparked interest in his professional background. He is described as an Indian national who has spent more than 10 years working in commercial aviation. His experience would have been particularly important during an emergency requiring a pilot to remain focused while dealing with an unexpected threat inside the cockpit.
The incident also highlights the importance of cockpit procedures and the responsibilities placed on pilots during commercial flights. Captains are responsible for the safe operation of their aircraft and must be prepared to respond quickly when faced with technical problems, medical emergencies, security threats or other unexpected situations.
For passengers aboard FZ1073, however, the incident was reportedly far more frightening. What began as an ordinary journey between Dubai and Tel Aviv suddenly became an emergency after the alleged confrontation in the cockpit.
Israeli officials have described Machchhar's actions in highly positive terms, while details surrounding the alleged attack remain subject to investigation. The circumstances leading to the confrontation, the exact sequence of events inside the cockpit and the actions of the co-pilot will be important parts of any official inquiry.
The aircraft's diversion to Saudi Arabia brought the immediate crisis to an end, but the unusual events aboard the flight have continued to attract international attention.
Machchhar's name is now being widely associated with the dramatic flight, as authorities and aviation observers seek to establish exactly what happened during the journey and how the aircraft was brought to safety.
