Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir has announced free medical services at county health facilities throughout October, offering relief to residents seeking treatment.

Speaking during a public address, Nassir said patients admitted to county hospitals would have their outstanding medical bills waived. He also announced that mortuary fees would be waived for families collecting the bodies of their loved ones.

The governor further said outpatient services would be provided free of charge during the month.

“Starting from this exact minute, I am issuing an order as the Governor of Mombasa that every patient in our hospitals and those in the mortuary shall be discharged without paying any fees,” Nassir said.

Nassir urged residents to use the opportunity to seek medical attention and undergo screening at county facilities.

He said the county had stocked its hospitals with medicines and medical equipment to support the provision of services. Community health promoters were also expected to encourage residents to seek screening and treatment.

The governor said the initiative was being undertaken in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He linked the programme to Odinga’s advocacy for accessible healthcare and social welfare.

The directive is expected to ease the financial pressure on families dealing with hospital bills and mortuary charges.

Nassir’s announcement comes as Mombasa County continues efforts to improve access to healthcare services for residents.

Residents seeking treatment during October will be able to access the services under the announced waiver, subject to the county government’s implementation guidelines.

The governor’s announcement has placed county health facilities at the centre of the October programme, with residents encouraged to seek medical attention when needed.
