Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has moved to clarify the health of her brother, ODM leader Dr Oburu Oginga, following reports circulating on social media about his condition.
Speaking on behalf of the Odinga family on Tuesday, October 6, Ruth said the reports were false and confirmed that the 83-year-old politician was recovering steadily.
“Dr. Oginga is well and continues to recover steadily,” Ruth said.
She thanked Kenyans who had reached out to the family with prayers and messages of goodwill, saying the support had provided encouragement as Oburu recuperates.
The family, however, expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, warning that inaccurate reports about the ODM leader’s health were causing unnecessary distress.
Ruth appealed to journalists, social media users and members of the public to confirm information before sharing it, particularly when dealing with sensitive matters concerning an individual’s health.
She urged those seeking updates on Oburu to rely on official communication from the family and the ODM party rather than posts circulating online.
The family also asked Kenyans to continue praying for the ODM leader while giving him the privacy and quiet he needs during his recovery.
The statement came after claims about Oburu’s health gained attention online, prompting concern among his supporters and members of the wider political community.
Ruth did not disclose the nature of Oburu’s illness or provide details about his treatment. Instead, the family focused on confirming his current condition and appealing for restraint as he recovers.
Earlier on Tuesday, Homa Bay Governor and ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga also sought to reassure the public about Oburu’s condition.
Wanga said she had been with the ODM leader and described him as being in high spirits and making progress in his recovery.
The ODM leader’s office has similarly said Oburu is well and following doctors’ advice to rest and limit strenuous engagements.
Oburu took over the leadership of ODM after the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025.
