ODM leader Oburu Odinga has been largely missing from the political scene for several weeks, with his absence coming at a critical time as the party positions itself for the 2027 General Election.

Oburu, who is also the Siaya Senator, took over as ODM leader following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025.

His reduced public activity has coincided with major political developments within ODM, including discussions over the party’s relationship with President William Ruto and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Oburu’s absence is linked to medical attention. He previously confirmed that he travelled to the United Kingdom on the advice of his doctors for a comprehensive medical assessment and a period of rest and recovery.

In September, his sister, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, said Oburu remained in the UK while doctors continued assessing him. She said he had improved but was not yet ready to return to Kenya.

On Monday, October 5, reports emerged that Oburu had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital, where he was reportedly receiving treatment.

Despite his absence, ODM’s operations have continued. The party’s Central Committee held a meeting on September 9, chaired by Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati.

Before travelling, Oburu had said his absence would give the party an opportunity to demonstrate that its structures could function without him being physically present.

He also named Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir to work with the National Central Committee and the party secretariat in running the party’s affairs during his absence.

The situation comes as ODM faces important decisions over its 2027 strategy. In July, Oburu said the party would not field its own presidential candidate and would instead support President Ruto’s re-election bid.

That position has placed ODM at the centre of political discussions surrounding a possible arrangement with UDA.

Meanwhile, senior ODM figures including Arati, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and former party leader Wycliffe Oparanya have remained active in the political arena.

Oburu’s absence also comes amid growing discussions about Raila’s political legacy and the ambitions of members of the Odinga family ahead of 2027.
