Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has questioned Kenya’s handling of political opponents from neighbouring countries, citing the case of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Speaking on Saturday during the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, Matiang’i recalled his time as Interior minister under retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He said the former administration resisted pressure to arrest opposition figures from neighbouring countries who visited Kenya.

Matiang’i specifically referred to Besigye, who disappeared in Nairobi in November 2024 and later appeared before a Ugandan military court.

Kenya said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and denied authorising his transfer. Uganda said it had been in contact with Kenya over the matter.

“Ukiona vile kama Kizza Besigye alishikwa na kupelekwa huko, hiyo sio matakwa ya Wakenya,” Matiang’i said.

He argued that Kenya should uphold its democratic principles when dealing with political figures from neighbouring states.

The remarks come as President William Ruto continues to promote Kenya as a key voice in African diplomacy.

Ruto has advocated greater African representation in global institutions and has repeatedly highlighted the importance of African sovereignty and multilateral cooperation.

Matiang’i’s comments have brought renewed attention to the question of how Kenya balances its foreign-policy commitments with sensitive regional political disputes.

The Besigye case remains a contentious issue in Kenya-Uganda relations, particularly over the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and subsequent appearance in Ugandan custody.
