Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has explained why he stayed away from Parliament during the impeachment proceedings against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October 2024.

Speaking to journalists in Chuka on Saturday night, October 3, 2026, Nyoro said he believed the impeachment motion could be defeated if MPs who opposed it stayed away from the proceedings.

He said his understanding was that an impeachment required a two-thirds majority, and that denying the motion the required numbers would cause it to fail.

“That is what I thought was the best strategy,” Nyoro said, explaining his decision not to participate.

Gachagua was removed from office after the National Assembly approved the impeachment motion on October 8, 2024. A total of 282 MPs supported the motion, while the Senate later upheld his removal after finding him guilty on five grounds.

Nyoro was then chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee. He did not sign the impeachment motion and was among MPs who did not take part in the debate and vote.

His latest explanation differs from an earlier account in which he cited conscience and personal conviction for his decision.

Nyoro also addressed his position on the Finance Bill 2024, which triggered nationwide protests over proposed tax increases.

“Yes, I supported,” he said when asked about the bill.

He explained that he was part of the Kenya Kwanza administration at the time and said he raised his concerns through internal government discussions rather than publicly.

Nyoro also noted that the Finance Committee, rather than the Budget and Appropriations Committee, handled the Finance Bill in Parliament.

He said he did not support the subsequent Finance Bill and had worked with MPs to oppose it.

Nyoro urged Kenyans to examine his parliamentary record when assessing his political decisions.
