A Nigerian military aircraft carrying 32 people crashed in Ondo State on Monday after air traffic controllers lost contact with it during a flight from Benin to Lagos.

The aircraft disappeared from radar at about 9:13am local time after repeated attempts by air traffic controllers to establish contact failed.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the wreckage was later located near a naval base in Igbokoda, Ondo State.

Preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were aboard the aircraft. The Nigerian Air Force identified it as an ATR-42 operating a routine flight to Lagos.

Rescue teams were sent to the area after the aircraft went missing as authorities began efforts to establish what had happened.

Keyamo said he spoke with Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke and assured the Nigerian military of the Aviation Ministry's support in responding to the crash.

President Bola Tinubu later confirmed that there were no survivors.

Tinubu expressed condolences to the families of those who died and directed the Nigerian Air Force to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The President said the investigation should establish what caused the aircraft to go down and provide answers to the families of those who lost their loved ones.

Authorities have not yet released details explaining what happened between the time the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers and the discovery of the wreckage.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft and available flight information as they work to determine the cause of the crash.

The accident occurred during a routine military flight between Benin and Lagos, with the wreckage later found in Igbokoda in southwestern Nigeria.
