Wicknell Chivayo’s Ex-Wife Sonja Madzikanda Makes First Public Appearance After His Sudden Death as Family and Mourners Gather in Harare

Sonja Madzikanda has made a public appearance following the death of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, joining mourners at his family home in Gletwin, Harare.

Madzikanda arrived at the residence on Friday, October 2, accompanied by her mother. Her appearance came as relatives and close associates gathered to mourn Chivayo, who died in a helicopter crash on September 30.

The visit was notable because Madzikanda was previously married to the businessman and shares two children with him. Their relationship ended after several years together, with their separation later becoming the subject of legal proceedings involving property and family matters.

Chivayo’s death has attracted widespread attention in Zimbabwe and beyond. President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed his death after the helicopter crash, while reports identified his wife, Lucy Muteke, among those who also died in the accident.

At the Gletwin residence, mourners continued gathering as the family prepared for the businessman’s funeral. Madzikanda’s arrival added another personal dimension to the mourning period, bringing together people connected to different chapters of Chivayo’s life.

Her appearance also came as the family dealt with the wider impact of the tragedy, including arrangements for Chivayo’s children. Reports said the children were receiving counselling following their father’s death and had not yet joined mourners at the funeral venue.
