Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has pledged to scrap the Housing Levy and VAT on fuel and electricity if his political movement takes power after the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna made the pledge on Sunday, October 4, 2026, during the launch of The Equitable Party (TEP) in Nairobi, where he was unveiled as party leader.
He said a team of experts was preparing the party’s policy platform, which will be released ahead of the 2027 election.
According to Sifuna, the team has identified areas where government spending can be reduced, including what he called “budgeted corruption”. He said the savings would help finance the proposed tax cuts.
He also proposed reducing government borrowing from the domestic market while increasing lending to businesses. Sifuna said the experts believe Kenya could balance its budget within 15 months.
“The people must not remain an audience to politics,” Sifuna said, calling for greater public participation in policymaking.
He said young people, women and communities should have a role in shaping government policy.
Sifuna also announced plans to rebrand TEP as Linda Mwananchi after the Registrar of Political Parties reserved the name on October 1.
He warned that TEP would remain the political vehicle if the rebranding process faced further obstacles.
