President William Ruto has assured Lamu residents that their concerns over land, jobs, livelihoods and the environment will be addressed as the proposed Dangote East African Refinery project moves forward.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Ruto said residents had a right to ask questions about how the project would affect their communities.

He said issues involving land, employment, local businesses and the environment should be addressed as construction progresses.

“Your interest will be taken care of. Your rights will be protected. Your voice will be heard from today until this refinery runs and beyond,” Ruto said.

The President said the government would ensure that land matters are handled according to the law while environmental and social concerns are considered during the development of the refinery.

Ruto’s remarks come after some Lamu residents raised concerns about compensation, land rights and the benefits they would receive from the project. More than 130 residents have also challenged aspects of the project in court over disputed land.

The President also highlighted the employment opportunities linked to the refinery. He said the project could create about 60,000 direct and indirect jobs and generate more than Sh2 billion in monthly wages during construction.

He urged young people, professionals and local businesses to prepare for opportunities that could arise from the project.

Dangote has separately announced plans for a training school in Lamu that will provide skills to local residents, with the initial programme expected to target 1,000 people.

The proposed refinery is part of Dangote’s planned investment in East Africa and is expected to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day once completed.
